Betye Saar: Drifting Toward Twilight

A documentary short about renowned assemblage artist Betye Saar and the creation of her installation “Drifting Toward Twilight” for The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. This film offers a rare peek into Saar's creative process and explores her biography and inspirations via a rangy conversation with the artist's granddaughter and exhibition co-curator Sóla Saar Agustsson—adding an intergenerational aspect that's representative of Saar’s role as matriarch of a family of artists.

FILMMAKER STATEMENT

When my colleague Kyle Provencio Reingold got the commission for this piece, I was excited to take on the challenge of crafting a structure that would bring balance and resonance to the various themes he was looking to explore from Betye Saar's truly remarkable life and career. In addition to editing, I also supervised the post production of this project which included managing the workflow of the color grade, titles, sound design and the final mix of an original score composed and performed by Blue Note recording artist Joel Ross.

This film is included alongside the large scale installation now on display at The Huntington in San Marino, CA. It has also screened at UrbanWorld in New York City and the 40th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival
